Manama, Bahrain – January 25, 2012 – The Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Bahrain and SAH Global have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to make cutting edge proton therapy cancer treatment available to Bahraini cancer patients. SAH Global is currently in the process of constructing a network of proton therapy centers in the Middle East. The Ministry of Health will refer patients to SAH Care – the international medical services subsidiary of SAH Global, which currently coordinates and arranges treatment in its global network of proton therapy centers.
Proton therapy is one of the most advanced forms of cancer treatment available today. It provides a higher quality of life and has fewer side effects than conventional radiation therapy and is highly effective in treating tumors, especially in the prostate, breast, lung, spinal cord, brain, eye, head and neck and at the base of the skull.
Dr. Aysha Buaneq, the Undersecretary to the Ministry of Health, who signed the MOU on behalf of the Ministry of Health said: “The Ministry of Health will select cancer patients eligible for proton therapy and will take the necessary steps to acquaint oncologists in the Kingdom with this advanced form of cancer treatment, including holding training workshops for doctors.” The MOU provides that SAH Global will organize such workshops in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
Dr. Fatima Al-Beloushi, Minister of Human Rights and Social Development and Acting Minister of Health said: “the signing of this MOU is an invaluable step forward and I hope that this service will be a positive contribution to the lives of cancer sufferers.”
Dr. Ameen Al-Saati, Assistant Undersecretary for Hospitals reiterated that the “Ministry is committed to coordinating with all stakeholders to ensure that Bahraini patients who are eligible for proton therapy are treated expeditiously.”
SAH Global’s Chairman and CEO, Mr. Feroz Agad said, “We commend Dr. Fatima AlBeloushi and the Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Bahrain for their visionary leadership and commitment to provide Bahraini citizens with the most advanced form of cancer treatment available today. We look forward to providing our services and excellence in care to the citizens of Bahrain and are excited by the prospect of building one of our planned satellite proton therapy centers in Bahrain in the near future so that patients will not have to travel abroad.”
SAH Global is pioneering proton therapy treatment in the MENA region. It was the first company in the Middle East to be awarded a license to own and operate a proton therapy center in the State of Qatar and is in discussions with governments and potential local partners to build a network of proton therapy centres in the MENA region and beyond. The proton therapy centers will focus on treatment, research, development and training. SAH Care arranges and coordinates end-to-end treatment at preferential rates through its network of partner proton therapy centres around the world. SAH care is able to deliver significant cost savings and can reduce waiting times (which can otherwise exceed three months in many cases) to only a few weeks for patients throughout the Gulf region and beyond. It is expected that SAH Care’s quality of service will be further enhanced upon completion of SAH Global’s proton therapy center in Doha.

Although a private sector initiative, it is expected that SAH Qatar Proton will be a major contribution to Qatar’s QR 2.204billion ($605 million) National Cancer Strategy launched earlier this year by Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, Vice Chairperson of the Qatar Supreme Council of Health. SAH Qatar Proton will help to realise the National Cancer Strategy’s aim of making Qatar a global leader in cancer services by 2016 and will mean that Qataris will no longer need to go abroad. In fact, people from the Gulf region and further afield will come to Doha for Proton Therapy.
SAH Global was granted permission to build the first Proton Therapy centre in the Middle East in June of 2010 by the Qatar Supreme Council of Health. The project will be able to treat up to 2200 patients a year and will also serve as a training and educational centre for physicians and therapists from around the world. Feroz Agad, Chairman and CEO of SAH Global said, “There are only a handful of doctors in the world who can deliver Proton Therapy treatment, and SAH Global’s highly qualified team of Proton Therapy medical experts hail from prestigious Proton Therapy centres such as Harvard and Indiana Proton Centres. Together our team has over 80 years of combined experience and has been responsible for commissioning five Proton Therapy centres across two continents. In keeping with SAH Global’s commitment to help further the Emir HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and HRH Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned’s vision of education and knowledge transfer in the region, we are actively looking to recruit additional local personnel to be trained by our team in order to staff our Proton Therapy centres in the region.”
Mr Agad further added, “This flagship Proton Therapy centre in Qatar is the first in a number of critical steps in our global cancer strategy. We at SAH Global plan to build a network of Proton Therapy centres in the region and beyond, with SAH Qatar Proton as our prime centre. We are also in discussions with governments and potential local partners throughout the GCC and Europe for our satellite centres and we envisage this to be a long term relationship between SAH Global and our strategic partners, including QIB (UK).”
Mike Clark, Chief Executive Officer of QIB (UK) added, “We are delighted to act as advisor and arranger for SAH Global for the establishment of SAH Qatar Proton. The Qatar National Cancer Strategy is a vital component of Qatar’s healthcare vision and SAH Qatar Proton will be an important step forward in the fight against cancer, not just in Qatar but throughout the Middle East. This is the latest in a series of transactions where we are utilizing our presence in London, the global financial centre, and combining our leading market position, heritage, and history in Qatar, to bring landmark projects to the market.”
In January 2010, SAH Global signed a landmark agreement with the Qatar National Cancer Society (QNCS) through which the QNCS will refer Qatari patients qualifying for Proton Therapy to SAH Global’s medical tourism arm, SAH Care. While the Proton Therapy centre in Doha is being completed, SAH Care arranges and coordinates end-to-end treatment at preferential rates through its network of partner Proton Therapy centres around the world. In this way, SAH care is able to deliver significant cost savings and can reduce waiting times (which can otherwise exceed three months in many cases) to only a few weeks for patients throughout the Gulf region and beyond. It is expected that SAH Care’s quality of service will be further enhanced upon completion of SAH Qatar Proton.

SAH Global Awarded First License to Build $150m Proton Therapy Cancer Center in the Middle East
SAH Global Awarded First License to Build $150m Proton Therapy Cancer Center in the Middle East
Doha, Qatar — November 11, 2010 – The Supreme Council of Health of the State of Qatar has awarded SAH Global a license to build the first ever Proton Therapy Center in the Middle East. This demonstrates the commitment of the State of Qatar towards remaining on the cutting-edge of medical advances and making the best treatments available for its citizens. This license, the first of its kind in the Middle East, promises to promote Proton Therapy as a less-invasive and innovative cancer treatment.
Through the license, SAH Global has been given the approval to build, own, and operate a Proton Therapy Center for treatment of cancer patients from the region and beyond, without the need of a local sponsor. Feroz Agad, Chairman and CEO of SAH Global said, “One of the driving factors that brought us to the State of Qatar was the favorable terms offered by the government, in terms of ownership in the healthcare sector without local sponsorship. We found that Dr. Jamal Khanji and the Supreme Health Authority have shown an exceptional drive and commitment to the well being of the people of Qatar and the surrounding region.” Additionally, through its subsidiary, SAH Care, patients from the Middle East will be able to receive treatment at SAH Global’s partner centers until the Doha center is completed. Earlier this year the Qatar National Cancer Society and SAH signed a landmark agreement ensuring the availability of Proton Therapy Cancer Treatment to patients referred by the QNCS.
Mr. Agad said, “By being the first to acquire this type of license in the Middle East, we can now commence in fulfilling our vision of building a network of Proton Therapy Cancer Centers, regionally and globally, with our Prime Center based in the State of Qatar. We are also engaged in discussions with other ministers and potential local partners throughout the GCC and Europe, including Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom as potential sites for our future satellite centers.” It has been estimated that the Prime Center in Qatar will come at a cost of approximately $150 million and will be able to treat up to 2200 patients a year, as well as serve as a training and educational center for physicians and therapists from around the world.
Mr. Agad further added, “Being awarded this License has brought us another step closer in the fight against cancer in the Middle East, enabling us to commence in putting Qatar at the forefront of Proton Therapy delivery and education. By bringing this progressive technology, we at SAH are actively recruiting local personnel to educate and train, in keeping with one of our aims to provide knowledge transfer in the region.” SAH Global’s commitment to education will ensure that the State of Qatar will not only serve as an avenue for treatment, but also as a center for research and development in the fight against cancer, a vision which is in keeping with that of the Emir HH Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and HRH Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned.
SAH Global has been the pioneer in bringing this technology to the Middle East and was the first to introduce Proton Therapy as a viable solution at this year’s Hospital Build Middle East Conference. Additionally SAH’s COO, Mr. Faique Sayeed, co-chaired the Leaders in Healthcare Symposium, while Mr. Agad delivered a presentation about the future of healthcare in the Middle East.
Proton Therapy was pioneered in the United States 30 years ago and to date has been used for treatment on over 60,000 patients. Proton Therapy treatment uses protons, the positively charged particles in the nucleus of an atom. The power of protons allows higher doses of radiation to be used to control and manage cancer while significantly reducing damage to healthy tissue and vital organs. The result is a higher quality of life and higher success rate than is currently offered by traditional radiation therapy.
